The 'Beauty' of Giving By Nicki

“Let the Beauty you love be what you do. There are thousands of ways to kneel and kiss the ground.”

A couple of months ago, I came across these wonderful words of wisdom from one of my favorites poets, Rumi.  As one follower of Rumi  describes, "He does not offend anyone, and he includes everyone. The world of Rumi is neither exclusively the world of a Sufi, nor the  world of a Hindu, nor a Jew, nor a Christian; it is the highest state of a human being ? a fully evolved human. A complete human is not bound by cultural limitations; he touches every one of us." And that he has.

Rumi's words have given me an enlightened outlook on why I am compelled to continue to   live my life with some form of ethical conduct, similar to that of the noble eightfold path: right speech, right livelihood, right action.

This "Beauty" that I love is giving, whether it is imparting knowledge to others with a greater regard for learning, or bestowing respect to all forms of beings.  Since I was a child, I have  always believed that "what we do, make[s] us who we are," meaning the non-superficial things that we do outside of our occupational lives reveals our true selves.

As for me, I have always shown a great respect for the well being of others, so I have  volunteered countless times with charitable organizations that allowed me to accomplish this goal. This selfless act of giving (even in the smallest form) stems from my own deeper appreciation for even the most minute form of "fortune".  Giving is my way of conveying the act of "kneel[ing] and kiss[ing] the ground" for my humble yet blessed life.

So, I hope by sharing these wise words from Rumi helps guide you to your inner "Beauty."  Find that which makes you happy and grateful; do it and live it.

心の美とは与えること

「あなたの愛する美のままに行動しなさい。ひざまずいて、地面にキスをする方法は人によって違っていていいのです。」

数か月前に、大好きな詩人の一人、ルーミーのすばらしい名言に出会いました。彼の信奉者の一人は、「彼は誰も傷つけることなく、それでいて誰のことをも言い表している」と述べています。ルーミーの世界とは、もっぱら神秘主義者だけの世界というわけではなく、また、ヒンズー教徒だけでも、ユダヤ教徒やキリスト教徒だけの世界というわけでもないのです。つまり、人間の最も崇高な姿というか、完全に進化しきった人間の世界なのです。完璧な人間は文化の制限に拘束されることはありません。つまり、私たち全員の心を動かす存在なのです。それが、彼の持っている世界です。

ルーミーの言葉は、なぜ、私が道義的に正しい行為に従って生活を続けなければならないのか、この疑問に対しての賢明な見解を与えてくれました。その生活は正語、正命、正業といった、八正道（ブッダが涅槃悟りの世界に至るために必要だと説いた八つの実践徳目）にも似ています。

私が愛するこの「美」とは、学ぶことに敬意を表しつつ知識を与えることであれ、生きとし生けるもの全てに尊敬の念を抱くことであれ、与えるということなのです。子どもの時から、「自分の行動が、自分を作る」ということ、つまり、仕事以外で私達が行う、表面的でない行動が、私たちの本当の姿を明らかにしてくれる、ということを信じてきました。

私自身に関して言えば、いつも他人の幸福を尊重してきました。だからこそ、数えきれないくらいのボランティアを行い、この目標を達成することができたのです。与えるというこの無欲な行いは（たとえどんなにささいなことでも）、人生のどんなに小さな「幸運」にさえも深く感謝できるという気持ちから生じています。与えることが、私にとって「ひざまずいて地面にキスする」というルーミーの言葉の実践であり、つつましやかで幸せな生活を手に入れるためのものなのです。

ルーミーのこの名言を皆さんに紹介することで、皆さんも心の内にある「美」へと導かれることを願っています。自分が幸せだと感じられるもの、ありがたいと感じられるものをぜひ見つけて下さい。そしてその美を実践してください。
