Jazz: America's Classical Music By Tom

Sometimes people complain that there hasn't been an original art form to come from America. Not like Japan anyways. Japan has many traditional arts and cultural activities, for example: calligraphy, poetry, ceramics, gardens, sumo wrestling, tea ceremony, Manzai comedy, Koto and traditional dance.
America is a melting pot, it is a land of foreigners, few people’s ancestors are from America, most people are “Gaikoku-jin.” When these foriegn cultures mix, new, beautiful things happen. For example: Jazz, America’s classical music. Jazz has roots in African rhythms and melodies, European harmonies, and in American blues. It’s a true blending of cultures.

Jazz is the most exciting and interesting music in the world. It’s as diverse as the people who create it. The history of jazz is filled with amazing stories of world class musicians overcoming challenges to create great music. Jazz began as New Orleans music, and now it’s played and enjoyed by great musicians all over the world. It truly is the World’s Folk Music.
I love jazz and enjoy listening to recordings everyday, here are some of my favorite recordings. You can buy them in most CD stores. I guarantee these records will give you a lifetime of enjoyment, if you just listen.

アメリカを起源とする独自の芸術形式はないという批判を時々うけます。
どう考えても日本と同じ、ということはありえません。日本には伝統芸術や文化活動が多くあります。たとえば、書道、詩、陶芸、庭園、相撲、茶道、漫才、琴、そして伝統的な舞踊などです。

アメリカは人種のるつぼであり、他の国から来た人達だらけの土地であり、アメリカ出身の祖先を持つ人はほとんどおらず、ほとんどの人が「ガイコクジン」なのです。こういった外国文化が混ざり合うとき、新しくそして素晴らしいことが起こるのです。たとえば、アメリカのクラシック音楽であるジャズ。ジャズのルーツはアフリカのリズムとメロディー、ヨーロッパのハーモニー、そしてアメリカのブルースにあります。まさに、文化の融合なのです。

ジャズは世界で最も刺激的で興味深い音楽です。ジャズを生み出した人々と同じくらい、多様性に富んでいます。ジャズの歴史は、素晴らしい音楽を作り出すために、様々な試練をも克服しているワールドクラスのミュージシャンの驚くべき素晴らしいストーリでいっぱいです。ジャズはニューオーリンズの音楽として始まり、現在は、世界中の素晴らしいミュージシャンに演奏され、楽しまれています。まさに、世界のフォークミュージックなのです。
