“ノートン”の木が風の中できらめき、目の前で銀や青に光り輝き踊っている。太陽が沈み始める頃、空は黄橙から霞がかった赤へと変わっていく。“リート”は草原を走り抜けて、巣穴に身を隠す。太陽がついに地平線の下にもぐりこんだ頃、ぼくの友達は起き上がり、“プランボ”の缶をぼくに手渡し踊り始める。もうそろそろ帰る時間だ。“ヤーム”に乗り込み、苔むした岩を越え、文明世界へ飛んで帰るのだ。

ドアのベルが鳴り、ぼくは立ち上がってドアを開ける。小包だ。配達人に手を振って見送り、冷たく湿ってどんよりとした空気の中、数分間ぼくは立っている。それからぼくは、コンピューターのスクリーンの中の３Ｄバーチャルの世界にふたたび戻って行く。７歳の頃からコンピューターゲームをやっているが、進歩の速さには目を見張るばかりだ。この３０年間で、コンピューターとビデオゲーム（と技術）は、指数関数的に力を伸ばしてきた。四角いブロックが次々とまた四角いブロックを追いかけるゲームから、プレーヤーが独自の経済や政府を運営するような、ほぼ完璧な三次元世界のゲームまでさまざまだ。

ぼくは大いに興味がある。これからの３０年で何ができるようになるだろう。ゲームの中で、見たり聞いたりするだけでなく、触ったり、匂いを嗅いだり、味わったりすることができるようになるだろうか？ひょっとして、ぼくたちはもう既に映画のマトリックスのような仮想現実の中に生きているのか？ゲームの中のそのゲームの中の、そのまたゲームの中のゲームで遊んでいるのか？　さてそろそろコーヒの時間だ。いや、バーチャルコーヒーか？

（英語原文）Adam’s tsubuyaki

The “Notum” tree shimmers and glitters in the wind, silvers and blues dancing before our eyes. The sky turns yellow orange and then a hazy red as the sun begins to set. A “leet” runs through the short grass to the safety of its hole. My friend gets up, hands me a can of “Plumbo” and starts dancing as the sun finally ducks below the horizon. It is time to go. We get into my “Yalm”, take off over the mossy rocks and fly back to civilization.

The doorbell rings and I stand up to answer the door. It’s a parcel. I sign and wave the postman off and stand for a few minutes in the cold and the wet and the gloom. Then I turn back to my computer screen and the virtual 3D world therein.

I have been playing computer games on and off since the age of 7 and am astonished at the pace of progress. In the last 30 years the power of computers and video games (and technology) has increased at an exponential rate. From a square block chasing other square blocks to almost perfect 3D worlds that have their own economies and governments run by the players.

I am intrigued. What does the next 30 years hold for us? Games where we can touch, smell and taste as well as see and hear? Are we already in some kid of virtual reality a.k.a. the Matrix? Are we playing a game within a game within a game within a ……….?

Oh well time for a cup of coffee, or is it a virtual cup of coffee? J
