車を運転する時は、交通ルールに従う必要があります。交通ルールというのは、道のどちら側を運転するか（日本では車は左側通行）というような、基本的なことです。

もしドライバーがみんな、自分勝手にどちら側を走るかを決めて運転したら、どんなに混乱することか想像してみてください。運転手が自分で勝手にルールを作って、既存のルールを無視するなら、車で走るなんて、とてもできることではありませんよね。

文法は、言葉（書き言葉も話し言葉も）を使うための基本的なルールです。文法がなくては、言葉が混乱してしまいます。みんなが自己流の文法を作ってしまうかもしれません。たとえば私は、"working (働いている)"と言う代わりに、" work-potato(※)"と言うようにするかも。そうすると、私には"work-potato”という単語が、"work”という動詞の現在進行形だとわかっても、それが他の人にはわかるでしょうか。（勝手に作った文法だから、わからないよね。）文法がなければ、コミュニケーションはひどく難しいものになってしまうかもしれないのです。

言語を学ぶ上で、文法が「最も重要なもの」というわけではない、という同僚のニックの考えに私も賛成です。文法ができなくてもコミュニケーションが成り立つこともあります。でも、文法がちゃんとしていなかったら、コミュニケーションに混乱をまねいたり、時間がかかったりすることもあります。文法は、あいまいさを最小限にし、一般的に周知のルールを表しているのです。だから、文法の学習に一時間費やすことが無駄な時間だというわけではありません！

※work-potatoという言葉はローランドの造語だね！”couch potato”って言葉（カウチポテト（族）、テレビばかり見ている人）にかけて、作ったんだって！

When you drive your car on the road, you need to obey certain rules. These rules may be as basic as driving on one particular side of the road (in Japan, the left-side).

Imagine the chaos there would be if all drivers could just decide for themselves which side of the road they wanted to drive on. Driving would be impossible if drivers just made up their own rules, and ignored the road rules that already existed.

Grammar gives us a basic set of rules for using language (both written and spoken). Without grammar there would be linguistic chaos. People might just invent their own grammar. I might decide to say “work-potato” instead of “working”. I would understand that ”work-potato” was the present progressive tense of the verb “work”; but I wonder if anybody else would? Without grammar communication could be extremely difficult.

I agree with my colleague, Nick, grammar isn’t the “be-all and end-all” of language learning. In some situations, weak-grammar doesn’t make communication impossible. However, weak grammar can make communication confusing and time-consuming. Grammar minimizes ambiguity. Grammar provides a set of generally understood rules. An hour spent studying grammar is not an hour wasted.
