ぼくは文法がきらいです。文法なんて、つまらないし、難しいし、ぜ～んぜんおもしろくない。日本の学校では、生徒に文法を練習させて、徹底的に頭に叩き込もうとするので、生徒が言葉を学ぶのがきらいになってしまうんだろうなって思います。ぼくは、言葉を学ぶのに、文法を勉強するのが必ずしも一番良い方法だとは思っていません。

でも、誤解しないでください。文法は重要だと思いますよ。ただ、ぼくは文法がきらいなだけなんです。

言葉を家にたとえるならば、文法は家の壁の中にある骨組みにあたります。石膏ボードやペンキがなければ、家の見栄えは悪いでしょう。けれど、自分の家を頑丈でしっかりしたものにしたいのなら、家にはやはり丈夫な骨組みが必要でしょう。家の骨組みが丈夫でなければ、良い家とは言えないのです。

言葉も、会話力や読解力をちゃんと身につけるためには、正しい文法が必要だという点でこれと似ています。文法も、家の骨組み同様、格好良くないし、正しい使い方を知ることは容易なことではありません。家を楽しむために、家の骨組みについて考える必要はないでしょう。文法も同様の考え方でいいんです。文法のことを考え過ぎず、文法というのは言葉をしっかりしたものにするためにあるのだと考えてみてください。

生徒さんの多くが、文章の中で文法を考え過ぎて、まさに英語をしゃべっているんだという事実を心から楽しむことができないでいます。言葉を学ぶことは、単に文法を学ぶということだけではありません。文法をもとに作ったものを楽しみ使うことだと思います。家に住むというのは、その家の骨組みを見て過ごすということではありません。その家がなんて快適なんだろうって楽しむことなのです。

"I hate grammar."

I hate grammar. Grammar is boring, hard, and downright uninteresting. Japanese schools tend to drill and nail these into young students skulls until some of them absolutely hate learning languages. I don't think this is necessarily the best way to learn languages.

Don't get me wrong, I think that grammar is important. I just hate it.

Think of language like a house, and that grammar is like the framework inside the walls of this house. Without the drywall and paint, your house would be ugly. However, if you want your house to be sturdy and correct, your house needs to have strong framework. If your house doesn't have strong framework, your house isn't very good.

Language is similar because you need to have good grammar to make sure that your speaking and reading is good and strong. But like the framework in a house, it's ugly, and not easy to know how to use correctly. We don't need to think about the framework in our house to enjoy the house, and this is how we should think of grammar. Don't think too much about it, but know that it's there making your language skills solid.

Many of my students are too busy thinking about the grammar in a sentence to truly enjoy the fact that they are really speaking English. Learning language isn't only about learning grammar, its about enjoying and using what the grammar has built. Living in a house isn't about looking at the framework, its about enjoying how comfortable your home is.
