今月は、スコットランドという小さくて不思議な国についてお話したいと思います。

スコットランドは、U.K.（the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland= グレートブリテンおよび北部アイルランド連合王国=英国の正式名）を構成している４つの国の一つです。そこに住んでいる人はわずか５００万人にしかすぎませんが、この小さな国がなかったなら、世界はウンとつまらないものになっていることでしょう。

なぜぼくがこんなことを言うのかって？
それは、スコットランドが、ゴルフの発祥地、ショーン・コネリー（映画００７シリーズの初代ジェームズ・ボンド役）の生まれ故郷、ロック・ネス・モンスター（ネス湖の怪獣、いわゆるネッシー）の生息地、スコッチ･ウイスキー、ハギス（羊の胃袋に羊の内臓と、オート麦を詰めた料理。おいしいよ！）、タータン・チェック、バグパイプやキルトで有名なのはもちろんのこと、発明や改良を担う最強集団だからです。この世に、電話も、テレビも、道路も、そしてレインコートさえなかったら、世の中はどうなっていることでしょう？これらを含めた多くのものを、スコットランド人が発明したのです。

Scotland the Brave (or Scotland the Smart?)

This month I'd like to talk about a small and mysterious country called Scotland. Scotland is one of the four countries that make up the UK (United Kingdom). There are only 5 Million people living there but if it wasn't for this wee country, the world would be a poorer place.

Why do I say this?
Well, not only is Scotland the birthplace of golf, Sean Connery (007), the home of the Lochness monster (Nessie), famous for its scotch whisky, haggis (a sheeps stomach filled with ofal and oats,Yummy!), tartan check, bagpipes and kilts.
But also Scotland is a powerhouse of innovation and invention. Where would the world be without telephones, televisions, roads, even raincoats? All of these and more are Scots innovations.

So the next time you answer the phone or watch the TV or go out in the rain spare a thought for that wee country they call SCOTLAND!
