秋は、「熟れた果実いっぱいの」季節、と有名な詩人↓が書いているように、秋は詩を書くのにもっともふわさしい季節だと思います。ならば、今回は英語で詩を作るアドバイスを伝授いたしましょう。良い詩を書くポイントを下にまとめてみました。

●頭韻法： 同じ文字や似た音で始まる単語から成り立つフレーズ
　例）a magnificent mauve mango　（どの単語もmから始まっている）

●直喩法： as やlikeを使って比較する方法
　例）brave as a lion ライオンのように勇敢だ、 as quick as lightening光のように速い、 voice like a frog-horn霧笛のような声

●隠喩法： 直喩と似ていますが、直喩ほどその例えが明らかではありません。
　例） heart of a lion ライオンのように（強い）心、 icy stare 氷のように（冷たい）、 Gordian knot of a problem 解決困難な問題（←古代ゴーディアス王によって結ばれた結び目の話に由来）、 whale of a task　くじらのように（ドデカイ）仕事 （←whale はクジラですが、whale of a ～で途方もなく大きな、大変な、とても素晴らしい、という意味のイディオム）、 a lamb among wolves　オオカミに囲まれた羊

●擬音語： 表現したいものに音の響きが似ている言葉
　例）zip　ビュッという音、 splash　バシャバシャ水の音、 crackle パチパチという音、 slither ずるずる滑る音、 sizzle ジュージュー焼く音、 gulp ゴクゴク飲みこむときの音、 smack ピシャリと打つ音、 crash クラッシュする音

●押韻： 音の似ている単語
　例）get/wet, dog/fog, light/might, food/mood, feet/seat, pen/ten, hop/top, squeeze/please, hotel/motel, down/frownなど

イギリスの詩人、ジョン・キーツの素晴らしい詩、「秋に寄せて」の一部をここで紹介します。

　霧と熟れた果実いっぱいの季節
　実りをもたらす太陽と気脈を通じた友
　太陽と示し合わせて藁屋根の軒端の蔓に
　ブドウの実をたわわに恵み結ばせる。
　庭先の苔むした樹々をリンゴの実でしならせ

TIPS　FOR　WRITING　POETRY

Autumn – the season of `mellow fruitfulness`, as the poet wrote – seems to me to be the most appropriate season for poetry. That being so, I thought I might pass on some advice about writing poetry in English. The following are some of the ways poets make their poetry sound really good:

●ALLITERATION: a phrase made up of words that start with the same letter, or sound similar (e.g. `a magnificent mauve mango`)

●SIMILE: as …………. as ………….. ; ………… like ………………..  (e.g. as brave as a lion, as quick as lightening, voice like a fog-horn)

●METAPHOR: similar to a simile but less obvious (e.g. heart of a lion, icy stare, Gordian knot of a problem, whale of a task, a lamb among wolves)

●ONOMATAPOEIA: words that sound similar to the thing which they describe (e.g. zip, splash, crackle, slither, sizzle, gulp, smack, crash, etc.)

●RHYME: words that sound similar (e.g. get/wet, dog/fog, light/might, food/mood, feet/seat, pen/ten, hop/top, squeeze/please, hotel/motel, down/frown)

Here is some great poetry by the British poet John Keats (Ode to Autumn):
      Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness,
      Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun;
      Conspiring with him how to load and bless
      With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eaves run;
      To bend with apples the moss`d cottage-trees,
      And fill all fruit with ripeness to the core;…
