日本のユーモアと欧米のユーモアではとてもとても、と～っても大きな違いがあります。上の言葉でウディ・アレンが言いたかったことは、「ジョークは一度だけ」ということです。もし、そのジョークに説明が必要なら、それはもう面白いものではなくなってしまいます。ジョークを説明したら、そのジョークは死んでしまうのです。これは、英語を学習している多くの人が英語で映画を観ようとするときに直面する文化の壁の一つです。おもしろい冗談や駄じゃれ、気の利いた短いジョークなどがわからないのです。ぼくがガールフレンドと映画を観に行ったとき、数々の爆笑シーンで笑っているのはぼくたちだけでした。

ぼくが思うにその理由は、ジョークがうまく翻訳されていないからじゃないでしょうか。

もう一つの理由は、ユーモアがおもしろいかどうかというのは、聞き手がそのジョークのニュアンスを完全に理解しているかどうかによるところが大きいということです。ありふれたキャッチ・フレーズやスローガンをさりげなく使ったり、政治にまつわる話を耳にしても、英語を母国語としない人には理解できないことがあります。その言葉自体を聞き取ったとしても、本質的には、そのジョークを自分に対して説明しているのです。

上のウディ・アレンの言った言葉をみてください。

ぼくが言いたいことは何か、ですって？それは、わけのわからないジョークに悩まされるな、ということです。これは、自分自身が完全にその文化の中に浸らない限り、たぶん乗り越えられない文化的な違いです。決して理解できないこともたくさんあると思います。でも逆に日本語を学ぶものとしては、ぼくは「漫才」を完全にわかるようにはならないんじゃないかと思っています。

Japanese humor and western humor are very, very, very, very, very, different. What Woody Allen meant by the above statement is that you can only deliver a joke once. If an explanation is needed, the joke will no longer be funny. Explanation is the death of the joke. This is one cultural barrier that many English learners face when they try to watch English movies - they don't find the jokes, puns and one-liners very funny. I have gone with my girlfriend to a movie theater and we found ourselves the only one laughing during a lot of the most funniest scenes.

My only guess is that the joke doesn't translate well.

Another reason is that humor tends to rely on the audience completely understanding the nuances of the joke. Discreet references to common catch-phrases or slogans, or even political history can slip by a non-Native English speaker. Even if you do catch the words, you will in essence, be explaining the joke to yourself.

What's my point? Don't let a confused joke let you get frustrated. This is a cultural difference that you will probably never overcome unless you completely immerse yourself in the culture. There are many things that you will probably never get, but conversely, as a Japanese learner, I will never completely understand Manzai.
